TechSoup blog announces the Jan. San Francisco Online Community MeetUp in San Francisco. This month's meeting with special guests will focus on using wikis as community-building tools. If you're local, come join us.

How have you used wikis to build community? Share your experience here.

Perhaps the best-known example of a community wiki that I can think of is Wikipedia. It's a wiki-based encyclopedia with all user-created information. I'm amazed at the size (and scope) of this. I'm curious if any nonprofit folks have contributed to Wikipedia at all.

TechSoup is using a community wiki to share information about nonprofits work in Second Life. It's a good way of keeping track of collective information on the Web, documenting community work, and sharing resources.

How are you using wikis in your work?

I realize I am responding several months after the original post but I was just thinking about this this morning.
As we develop our social network service, I was thinking that rather than a best practices guide, a wiki may be of more use. What we will be doing is relatively new-- connecting media with nonprofits and users connecting with one another around that... so I think there may be many benefits and types of collaborations that we are ot even imagining. One way to encourage participation may be to make it aseasy as possible for our users to share their discoveries.
I will be proposing this to my company tomorrow... what do you think?

Hi, Maha,

Awhile back there was another online event about nonprofits and wikis. This thread called Online Event: Wikis and Nonprofits has a lot of the info that was shared at that time. There were other threads associated with the event at the time, and here is another of them, with some more info and some links. I'm thinking you might want to give that a look, then maybe post any questions that come from that.

What I found especially helpful about the info in the online event was that there were so many people sharing their personal experience.

Best wishes,

Hi Maha--

Our SF Net Tuesday event last Tues. was on how nonprofits and educators can use wikis. Ross Chapman has a video of the presentation you might find interesting.

Best,

Megan
